Bernadette Pajer (http://bernadettepajer.com) came to speak a few months back for the writer’s organization I coordinate. She was delightful and inspiring and if you haven’t had the opportunity to check out one of her books, I recommend you do so. She is most well-known for her Professor Bradshaw mystery series which takes place here in Seattle in the early 1900’s.
We had a chance to visit before her presentation about a variety of topics and eventually the books I had self-published came into play. It turns out, she too has self-published a book! The book is titled The First Time. A well-known local author tried her hand at self-publishing a book she enjoyed writing but never made to press. So, I looked it up on Amazon (although you can find it anywhere) and bought it.
As a cover designer myself, the first thing that struck me was that it has a gorgeous cover. Let’s face it, we really do judge a book by its cover. That fact cannot go undervalued. What I also appreciated was that while her name stands out, the title is the focus, but not so much that it distorts the beauty of the colors and momentum of the cover. While striking on its own, after having read the book, I now realize the full impact of the art. If you are considering writing a book, your cover is one of the most valuable selling points. You could have the best story inside – but no one will read it if your cover doesn’t attract them to pick up the book.
A fan of science-fiction, fantasy, and simply good storytelling, I couldn’t put this book down. It took me two days from e-book cover to – cover. I’m fascinated with time-travel and love for people to get what they deserve.
Curious? You’ll need to read it for yourself to find out.
