A few weeks ago, I signed up to take part in a writing contest offered by Joe Bunting at The Write Practice (http://thewritepractice.com/). The goal was to write a short story in 1,000 words or less. What set this contest apart was that we were able to workshop the story before final submission to the judges. That was fantastic! It was an excellent opportunity to talk with other writers from around the world, share experiences, and develop as a writer. Regardless of how I do, I feel rewarded.
Today, the stories were posted! Everyone was published on the Becoming a Writer website at ShortFictionBreak.com (http://shortfictionbreak.com/becoming-writer-contest-submissions/) so they can be viewed while judging is in session. Very fun. What I love is that I completely typed my website wrong for people to come check me out here! haha! So fun. At least it wasn’t in the story. :O)
This is the power of social media though – I wouldn’t have known about this contest if I hadn’t tweeted about an article I received in my inbox from The Write Practice. I thought it was helpful so I sent it out into the Twitter-Universe and the social media guy from TWP asked if I’d ever won a contest before (the post was about increasing chances of winning a contest). That started the dialogue and he invited me to enter theirs which closed that night. So I did!
And here I am. Happy as a clam to have written a story I hadn’t intended to, and now it’s posted for the world to see.
Opportunities are out there, we just have to allow ourselves to see them, and then act on them when they come our way!
Happy Writing to you, my friends!
